ABOUT THE STAGELIGHTWIKI

The STAGELIGHTWIKI was created by Arnold Serame, hoping to grow into being the most useful online information source for the entertainment lighting and media design professional.

WHY A WIKI?

One possible future for the STAGELIGHTWIKI is to have multiple contributors adding to the knowledge on the site.  Choosing a wiki format allows for a collaborative future without a painful transition later.

WHY GOOGLE SITES AND NOT MEDIAWIKI?

The first choice was to use MediaWiki, the software that Wikipedia is based on because of familiarity with the format.  But, the number one requirement for a possible future collaborative website is to keep the learning curve as low as possible for a wide range of writers to be able to contribute.  Just trying to make tables in MediaWiki for charts and graphs makes your head hurt.

Google sites, on the other hand, allows a team of people to create documents in Google Apps.  As easy to use as Office.

In addition, Google sites builds a lot of collaborative tools into the backend of the setup.  In the future possibility of multiple staffers working on the STAGELIGHTWIKI, these kinds of scheduling and communication tools will become invaluable.

Plus, it doesn't hurt to be tied in to Google for  instant placement in their search engine.

WHY A FREE TO DISTRIBUTE INFORMATION SITE?

One possible future of information is not a static book, but a constantly evolving source of information fed from a number of highly informed specialists, experts and designers.  In a field like ours that is constantly innovating on the technology front, and is becoming increasingly complex, it is impossible for one book to contain all the information needed for the entertainment lighting and media design professional and student.

An intriguing possible future exists of a free to distribute base of lighting information through the STAGELIGHTWIKI that our industry can rely on, and build upon.  In the future, lighting textbooks could build links to the STAGELIGHTWIKI, and other sites like it, so that textbooks will never go out of date.  The knowledge we pass on to other remains current.

Plus, in an industry like ours, the designers and technicians and creators that students want to hear most from, are the the ones who are too busy to teach.  Hopefully, the STAGELIGHTWIKI can evolve to be a platform on which the great designers and innovators in our industry can create smaller sized bits of information to share with the future generations of lighting and media design professionals.

Income generation would be ad supported and sponsorships.
